SHILLONG: Representatives from 13 Canadian universities and three colleges will be in Shillong to meet prospective students, school counsellors and teachers at Hotel Polo Towers from 5 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday.
The visit to Shillong is part of a road show that also includes stops in Guwahati and Kolkata.
This is the first time that Canadian institutions have come together under the Canadian government’s Edu-Canada banner to showcase undergraduate study opportunities in the Northeast region of India.  “Canada sees a lot of potential to build its education brand in the region. Our universities and colleges are eager to introduce their quality programmes to bright students from the Northeast of India who are looking at studying abroad,” said Canada’s First Secretary and Trade Commissioner, Ivy Lerner-Frank.
The road show aims to provide a platform for students to interact directly with Canadian institutions of higher learning and get information about education opportunities, requirements and admission processes in the country. A visa official from the High Commission will also be available to provide information on visa application process and timelines.  Canada is emerging as an increasingly popular destination for Indian students. Last year, Canada issued over 21,000 study permits to Indian students, a five-time increase from 2008. The current stock of Indian students in Canada is over 46,000.
