SHILLONG: The education scenario in Mawphlang area is set to get a major boost with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma agreeing to set up a Science and Commerce College in the area for which land would be made available by the people of Hima Mawphlang.
Interestingly, the building for the proposed college will be designed by the Chief Minister himself.
Addressing a function to launch the Rs.22.49 crore scheme for construction including metalling and black-topping of the road and link roads in Mawphlang-Mawngap area in preparation for Terra Madre International Slow Food Festival to be held in October this year, the Chief Minister said it was important for the leaders to focus on the needs of the given area.
Recalling his growing years and his subsequent resignation from medical profession to contest elections, the Chief Minister said, “We need to come out of our selfish mindset and self-centric mentality if we love our people, because people become frustrated, they lose hope and start rebelling when their aspirations are not met.”
Stating that Sohra and Mawlynnong are already on the global map, the Chief Minister said that the government wants to ensure that Mawphlang is also known globally, which is why this initiative was being taken and it should be the shared objective of all.
“Mawphlang is such a beautiful place and has the potential to become a tourist destination,” he said, adding that the area is so blessed that its windiness can be tapped to generate energy.
He also urged the people of the area to prepare for the upcoming Terra Madre Festival, saying that hosting an event of such a grand scale would not only require lot of money but also complete involvement of the people.
Earlier, the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang, NK Lyngdoh, handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister apprising him about the requirements for the area, which include establishment of Science and Commerce college, construction of a road from Lad Mawphlang to Mawphlang, commissioning of the Community Health Centre (CHC) the construction of which has long been completed and up gradation of police outpost at Mawngap to a full-fledged police station.
Later, the Chief Minister also inspected the CHC building and visited the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya from where he also took a view of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.
