Deaths on rise in Assam

New Delhi: Government on Tuesday admitted that there has been an increase in cases of and deaths on account of Japanese Encephalitis in several districts of Assam in the current year.

In a written reply to a question on monitoring and control of communicable diseases in Assam, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Sudip Bandhopadhyay disclosed in the Rajya Sabha today that there have been 474 cases of Japanese Encephalitis and 112 deaths reported in the state till September 1 this year. The Minister also informed that as many as 813 cases and 128 deaths had been reported in Assam till September 1 this year due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, while as many as 26,571 cases of malaria and 27 deaths due to it were reported till July this year in Assam. The Minister also admitted that people in Assam have been affected by different communicable diseases and outbreaks of acute diarrhoeal disease and jaundice have also been reported from many districts of the state, but denied that the aforesaid diseases have assumed epidemic form.

He also informed the House that the government was taking many measures for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases, besides implementing various schemes for provision of safe drinking water in the state in order to control water-borne diseases also. (PTI)
