151 BOPs in Tripura to have flood lights

Agartala: As many as 151 Border Outposts (BOPs) along the Indo-Bangla International border in Tripura will be brought under flood lighting system in the first phase, official sources said on Wednesday.

Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has undertaken work to install flood lighting system along the barbed wire fencing in the areas under 41 BOPs.

The National Project Construction Company (NPCC) has floated tender to cover 110 more BOPs, sources in the NPCC said.

Out of total 856 km border in Tripura, 673.90 km border has been fenced so far and 132.09 km is yet to be completed.

Currently, work is in progress along 97.95 km Indo-Bangla border and the work is expected to be over by March 2012 next, sources said.

The state government has sought approval of the Central government to erect barbed wire fencing along the zero-line in the nine places –Kasba Kalibari, Akhaura Check Post, Agartala Airport, Mohanpur Market, Sidhai Road and Khowai Market in West Tripura district, Belonia, Sabroom in South Tripura district and Kailasahar in North Tripura district.

The barbed wire fencing to check infiltration smuggling and cross border movement of armed guerrillas have been erected 150 yards away from the international zero line to adhere to Indira-Mujib pact signed in 1971. (PTI)
