Shillong: All roads under the control and management of the Cantonment are lying in disrepair. The road leading to Meghalaya’s oldest market Iewduh and the Iewduh Parking Lot is in shambles and could result in heavily loaded vehicles overturning on account of the huge potholes.
Last year when this issue was brought to attention of the Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh she had said that the Government was in discussion with the Cantonment Board. However no action seems to have been taken till date.
The other road is in Laitumkhrah along the Sweeper’s Colony all the way down to Spread Eagle Falls where the MES headquarters are located. This too is one of the most badly maintained roads.
When contacted, sources in the Military Engineering Services (MES) say that the contract for the repair works of the road leading to Khlieh Iewduh (Bara Bazar) has been approved and sanctioned since the last 8-9 months but the contractor concerned has not been able to carry out the work. The sources, however, said that this work will now be taken up urgently.
Regarding the Laitumkhrah-Spread Eagle Falls road, particularly the part near the culvert which is the most badly damaged, the sources inform that repair work for this road too will be taken up in the next one month.
