Shillong: Taking strong cognizance of reports of an NGO sending its volunteers to keep a check on ‘indecent’ couples at Ward’s Lake and other public places, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police AR Mawthoh said the District Police will not allow any NGO or individual to chase, assault or apprehended any person at these public places.

“No one is above the law and no one is an exception to the rule,” Mawthoh said on Wednesday.

He, however, pointed out that police would welcome any information on misconduct by individuals or couples at public places.

“But anybody taking the law into their own hands will invite stern legal action,” Mawthoh added.

Replying to a query, he said police has already initiated action so that the State is not projected in a wrong way due to indecent behaviour by some young couples at public places.

Mawthoh also informed that police patrol teams are posted in various parts of the city to ensure that no one tries to commit any nuisance in isolated places, especially in the dark.

Meanwhile, FKJGP general secretary Jo Marwein said the FKJGP had taken this initiative after seeing that young couples share intimate moments without showing any respect to passers-by, especially women, irrespective of the presence of children and elders.

He, however, maintained that FKJGP volunteers would not take the law into their own hands.

‘Our volunteers will definitely inform the police if they come across any such misconduct,” Marwein added.
