SHILLONG:  Following the application of Right to Information Act, Hynniewtrap Youth Council (HYC) has unearthed a major scam pertaining to purchase of M-tab, which were distributed among Class XII students in 2014 under the Chief Minister’s Student Digital Learning Aid Scheme.
As per the RTI documents received from the Information and Technology department, the HYC has found that there is a misuse of over Rs 6 crore in the purchase of M-tab.
The RTI documents revealed that the department had spent a total amount of Rs 22, 47, 50,000 for the purchase of 25,000 M-tab (model XTRON Z704).
According to RTI document, the government quoted price of each M-tab is Rs 8,990, while its printed price is Rs 6,850.
The State Government should have spent around Rs 17, 12, 50,000 as per the price of the tablet printed in the carton.
Further, the HYC cross checked with the firm Lava International, which supplied the device to the State Government. According to the firm, the Meghalaya Government received the entire lot at the rate of Rs 6,499 each M-tab.
“With the price quoted by the firm, the State Government should have spent only Rs 16, 24, 75,000” HYC organizing secretary Nickson Dohling told newsmen here on Wednesday.
