Agartala: Prof Siddhartha Roy, Director, CSIR Indian Institute of Chemical Biology has urged the students to devote more time in reading for enhancing knowledge while addressing the gathering on the occasion of the first Tripura Science Congress which began here on Thursday.

Prof Roy said that at least 10,000 hours reading was required to attain knowledge on any subject and expressed concern over gradual decline of the reading habit among the younger generation.

He urged the teachers to facilitate the students in developing the reading habit rather discouraging the adoption of the widely practicing method of learning now-a-days.

Prof Roy pointed out that scientific research and expansion of knowledge had re-gained the impetus in recent years following new policies in India and the development of science and technology in India was as old as India’s civilization but it witnessed a reverse impact during the last decade.

”India was pioneer in education, as Nalanda and Takhyasila was the first academic institution in the world and India’s contribution in Human Resource Development (HRD) is still recognised across the globe, which we need to retain,” he underlined.

Reiterating Prof Roy, Prof Shyamal Chakraborty of Calcutta University urged the guardians to change their attitude towards setting up the academic target of the children and opined that most of parents had been setting up the goals before the students wrongly.

”The parents have developed a notion that either IIT or medical is the only option for the future generation and as a result, they place the target before the students that to get a chance in IIT or medical college, which might not be the expectation of the student,” Prof Chakraborty said.

”This trend among this generation has now become dangerous for our future, which needs to be changed immediately otherwise, the country will suffer a lot in future,” he attributed.

Besides, scientists and technologists, about 800 delegates have attended two days Tripura Science Congress where as many as 32 issues would be discussed in five premier educational institutes of the states and Children Science Congress was also organised as part of the programme. (UNI)
