SHILLONG: With back to back success in rescuing abducted victims by the police in Garo Hills , the Acting DGP SK Jain appealed to people to co- operate with the police so that the spurt in abductions can be contained.
“We are concerned over the spate of abductions and killings, but with the cooperation of the people we will be able to contain the same”, he assured.
On February 13 last, police, after an exchange of fire had rescued one Niren Rabha, who was abducted by unidentified miscreants, who had fled after the police action.
The rescue without any casualty was possible after the police conducted operations with caution at Lalmati / Kholishabhita areas under Garobadha in West Garo Hills.
Again on February 15, one Hasmot Ali, hailing from Kalapani Banfulnagar, under Jalukbari, Guwahati was rescued by the security men in Garo Hills after an operation.
The victim who was kidnapped by armed men from an area adjacent to his house on February 8 was released by his kidnappers under pressure from the police. The operation also resulted in the arrest of three miscreants who were involved in the crime.
In yet another case of abduction, the Acting DGP indicated that it was due to the pressure from the police coupled with constant operations that the militants were forced to release the State Bank of India official Subodh Kumar Mishra, who was abducted from Gasuapara in South Garo Hills in August last year.
The official said in all the rescue cases, it was the systematic efforts of the Meghalaya police which helped the early release of the abducted victims by militants as well as miscreants.
Besides militants, there is a trend of mixed group of criminals engaging in abductions for the sake of money. “We want the co-operation of the families for the early rescue of victims. A lot of people report to us timely which is the need of the hour”, Jain said.
According to Jain, in kidnapping cases, the affected institutions whether they are banks, schools or others should report to the police without loss of time.
