TURA: The inaugural blasting of the Ganol Small Hydro Project (GSHP) was carried out on Wednesday at the dam site in Chibragre around 15 kilometres from here. Once completed, the multi-crore project, which has encountered many delays in the past, would cater to the power needs of the region.
The Rs 350 crore 21.5 MW project was conceived way back in 2006. While half of the expense for the project will be borne by the state government, the remaining would be managed through loans.
Speaking on the occasion, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi said that Ganol river had been in the tourism map since long and completion of the project would serve as an attraction for tourists across the State and beyond.
He added that the Ganol project would turn out to be a game changer for Garo Hills. Stating that the people of Garo Hills were lucky that land was still within the purview of the community, the Deputy Commissioner praised landowners and Nokmas for parting with their land willingly for the project.
