Three injured in Assam police firing

Chaygaon: Three persons were injured when police opened fire to quell a mob which attacked them and vandalised an office in lower Assam’s Kamrup district on Thursday, an official said.
The condition of the injured were stated to be stable, Deputy Commissioner Dr J Balaji said.
People in Chaygaon under Boko police station had been protesting since sometime against setting up of an office in the industrial estate, which they suspect to be a brewery. Balaji said the mob prevented two trucks carrying rice from entering the estate following which an altercation ensued and police came to the spot.
The angry protesters then pelted stones at police personnel, vandalised the office and damaged vehicles.
The police first baton-charged and then fired at the mob, injuring three persons, he said.
The injured were taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.
Police and CRPF personnel have gone to the spot and the situation is under control, the DC said.
The DC had recently ordered a probe into the allegations of the locals that a brewery was being set up in the industrial estate which they feared would pollute the environment there. (PTI)
