Rights panel chief: Govt’s 3rd target gets SC job

SHILLONG: The state political department is not lucky even for the third time as its request to get Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Amitava Roy to head the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has gone in vain.
Earlier, both former Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya T. Meena Kumari and retired Judge of Supreme Court Dr. Justice M K Sharma had declined the offer of the State Government to head the rights panel.
Justice Meena Kumari decided to become the Chairperson of Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission, while Justice Sharma offered pre-occupation as an excuse for not accepting the offer.
It was last month that the political department had written to the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court to be the Chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission.
However, as per reports, Justice Amitava Roy was appointed as the judge of the Supreme Court on February 27.
Though the political department had selected Additional Deputy Commissioner MB Challam and former Meghalaya DGP PJP Hanaman as the members of the Commission, the panel is yet to become functional due to the absence of the Chairperson.
