SHILLONG: The Mait Shaprang Movement (MSM) has decided to put on hold the indefinite hunger strike scheduled from March 9 after the State Government approved the amendments to the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012 and its rules which would be introduced in the upcoming Budget session of the Assembly.
However, MSM convener Michael Syiem warned that he would launch the agitation if attempts are made to dilute the Act or its implementation.
He also wanted to know if the Government would give enough time to all the MLAs to deliberate on the proposed amendments or will the amendments be rushed through on the last day of the session.
Responding on the Chief Minister’s appreciation for the MSM, Syiem said that the full credit for the Bill would go to Mukul Sangma for introducing and implementing the legislation which will be “one of the cornerstones of Meghalaya’s development provided the law is in tune with the needs of the society.”
