SHILLONG: A police team from Shillong on Thursday ‘arrested’ the jailed self-styled ‘commander-in-chief’ of Garo Hills-based militant outfit A’chik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) from Tura jail after he had allegedly made an extortion call from his prison cell demanding Rs.3 lakh from a woman in Shillong.
East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang informed that a woman had lodged an FIR that she had been getting calls from an unknown number on her phone who claimed to be the ‘eastern commander’ of GNLA.
During investigation, police ascertained that
the calls were being made from the Tura District Jail.
Armed with a search warrant from a court in Shillong, the police team conducted a search of Tura jail on Thursday and recovered the mobile phone which was used to make the calls from the possession of the self-styled ‘commander-in-chief’ of ANCA William A. Sangma, a resident of Bakrapur, Damra, Assam.
Informing that Sangma had been earlier arrested in Chennai, Kharkrang said that the militant has been arrested again and is slated to be brought to Shillong soon.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that the Police Investigation Officer would file an appeal in the court on Friday seeking the arrest of Sangma’s accomplice Nickseng M Marak of Selsella who is also an inmate of Tura the jail and is said to have been helping William in hiding the mobile phone and the SIM card.
