Kohima: Nagaland Home Minister Y Patton has appealed to the people of the state to demonstrate their maturity and asked them not to communalise and fuel the March 5 Dimapur incident further.
In a statement here on Sunday, Patton ‘earnestly’ appealed to any group, be it civil society or political party, not to politicise the Dimapur incident and allow the administration and the law enforcement agencies in the state to perform their duty.
“It is very unfortunate a mob had taken the law into their hands over the issue of an alleged rape of a college girl at Dimapur and even went to the extent of storming the district Central Jail, pulling him (the alleged rapist) out of the jail, paraded him naked and thrashed him to death.”
He said the mob even displayed his lifeless body at the heart of the Dimapur town which is is highly ‘condemnable’.
The Home Minister also claimed that the law enforcement agencies in the State had swung into action by arresting the alleged rapist on February 25 soon after the complaint about rape was lodged with the Dimapur police.
The people of the State and in particular citizens of Dimapur and the student communities should appreciate the immediate action of the law enforcement agencies. The anger of the people for such heinous crimes should be through other forms like protests and agitations but it is not proper when they take the law into their own hands, he stated.
On the steps taken by the government, Patton said, “We have ordered a ‘One-Man Judicial Inquiry’ to probe into the incident and also placed the Dimapur Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police and the Senior Superintendent of Dimapur Central Jail under suspension.” (UNI)
