Operation against GNLA continues

Tura: North Garo Hills police have shot dead a militant during an encounter with Garo ultras in which one police personnel also sustained bullet injuries on Saturday night.
Following intelligence reports about the presence of armed militants, police from Bajengdoba station launched an operation at Chichotjeng village at around 8:15 pm during which time a group of suspected Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) militants holed up inside a house opened fire.
During the firefight one unidentified militant was shot dead and a police constable sustained bullet injuries.
Battalion constable S C Momin of 4th MLP Bn received bullet injuries and was later shifted to Goalpara civil hospital where his condition is said to be stable.
From the encounter site police recovered a 9mm pistol with 3 live rounds and three empty cases and eight empty cases of 6.75 mm ammo.
The LAEF outfit which had once been defunct after the death of its founder and former police commando Peter Marak has of late been expanding its base and increasing its number of cadres.
Last year, a sizeable number of cadres from the group migrated from its stronghold in West Khasi Hills into Garo Hills territory infiltrating into North, South and West Gato Hills districts.
Ops against GNLA: With the intensified operations in the aftermath of the killing of 4 police personnel in South Garo Hills, an exchange of fire took place between the police and a group of suspected GNLA militants on Saturday morning at Rewak, outskirts of Baghmara  in South Garo Hills.
However, there was no casualty. A senior police official said that no one was injured in the incident as the militants were spotted walking in an inaccessible area.
It is yet to be known whether the self styled commander in chief of GNLA Sohan Shira was part of the group of the militants engaged in firing.
Four police personnel were  killed on Tuesday while at least two others injured after suspected armed cadres GNLA ambushed them in the jungles of South Garo Hills district in Meghalaya.(With inputs from Our Reporter)
