Metbah parades 16 MDCs before Guv lAdelbert resigns as CEM
SHILLONG: After a series of high-voltage political events that saw imposition of Administrator’s rule in KHADC, the focus has now shifted on Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi even as the CEM Adelbert Nongrum submitted his resignation to the chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew .
Both Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy on Thursday met Governor Tripathi to explain their respective stands on the issue.
The Chief Minister briefed the Governor justifying the decision of the Government to recommend the implementation of the Administrator’s Rule while the Opposition leader termed the decision of the Government as ‘illegal and unconstitutional’.
“I have briefed him the prevailing political crisis in the KHADC since the Governor wanted to know,” the Chief Minister told reporters after meeting the Governor.
On the other hand, the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly said that he made clear before the Governor that the situation did not warrant imposition of the Administrator’s Rule.
“ARPA still enjoys the majority and the only thing the MDCs wanted was to change the leader within the ruling coalition. They (ARPA MDCs) have also elected their new leader internally. The election of a new leader in ARPA does not mean they are in the minority,” Roy said.
As per the Constitution, he observed that it is important to have an election of the CEM by convening the special session.
“Instead of convening of the special session, the Government decided to impose Administrator’s Rule for six months which is illegal and unconstitutional. This is against the democratic principle,” he said.
“The response from the Governor is very positive. I hope the Governor will take the decision as per the provision of the Constitution,” UDP president said.
Meanwhile, ARPA chairman Metbah Lyngdoh paraded the 16 MDCs of the APRA before Governor to prove his majority. “I have also told him (governor) that all the 16 MDCs are with me,” Lyngdoh said.
He also said that the Governor assured that he would look into this matter and take a conscious decision.
Terming the decision of the Government as unconstitutional, he said that the imposition of the Administrator’s Rule was a big mistake on the part of the State Government.
