SHILLONG: At a time when medical profession seems to be becoming more of a profit-making than noble venture and patients are gradually losing faith in doctors, Justice Giridhar Malaviya, grandson of Bharat Ratna Awardee Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya has advocated the need for dedication on the part of the doctors to serve humanity.
Addressing the gathering during a conference organized by the department of cardiology, NEIGRIHMS on “Medical Ethics and Responsibilities of Young Medical Professionals” in the institute’s auditorium on Saturday, Justice Malaviya urged the young professionals to maintain the true traditions of medical practice as it has been practiced in ancient times.
While highlighting various points of medical ethics and responsibilities of young professionals, he asked the professionals to be aware of various maladies that ail the practice of medicine in contemporary times.
Principal Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Ram Mohan Mishra, stressed on the need for more open views on various traditional practices of medicine and also called for a fresh outlook on the need for fusion of traditional and modern medicines in a scientific temper.
Prof. Animesh Mishra, Sub-Dean (Super Specialty), Chairman Medical Education Unit pointed out the need for continuing medical education in the light of rising cases of litigation in medical practice and loss of faith between the patient and the doctor.
The Dean, Prof. Vandana Raphael emphasized on the original Hippocratic Oath which was said 2000 years back.
The Hippocratic Oath of knowingly not doing harm is the essence of medical practice, she said.
The function was attended by doctors, lawyers, army personnel, paramedical and para-military forces including students of NEIGRIHMS and other institutes of the city.
