Assam Rifles celebrates 180th Raising Day

SHILLONG: The Assam Rifles celebrated its 180th Anniversary of Raising on Tuesday with a solemn ceremony at the Headquarters of the Directorate General of Assam Rifles, Laitkor.
The Anniversary celebration commenced with a wreath laying ceremony, wherein Lt. Gen. R.K. Rana, Director General, and all officers of the Headquarters paid homage to the valiant martyrs at the War Memorial.
This was followed by a Special Sainik Sammelan by the DG which was relayed live to the entire force and culminated with a community meal, wherein retired AR personnel were special invitees.
The Assam Rifles was raised in 1835 with just 750 combatants, and has today metamorphosed into a formidable modern force with 46 Battalions. It is the oldest and most decorated force in the country.
The Raising Day function was also attended by prominent guests including Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya Umanath Singh, Justice T.N.K. Singh, Justice S.R. Sen, Air Marshal S.B. Deo, Air Marshal Sachdev Walia, Maj. Gen. Sukesh Rakshit, Rajesh Singh, AG Audit, M.S. Rao, Principal Secretary to Governor, Doley Burman, Director, NEPA, in addition to a number of senior officers from the Army, Air Force and other Central Armed Police Forces.
