GUWAHATI: In the wake of an Opposition MLA, Padma Hazarika of the AGP, alleging a nexus between a
section of policemen in Sonitpur district of Assam with the NDFB militants on extortion spree in Chariduar area in the district, the DGP of Assam Police Khagen Sarma on Wednesday said it was possible that some police personnel might have nexus with NDFB militants in personal level.
The DGP pointed out that the department had taken the allegation made by the MLA seriously and the officer in charge of Chariduar police station had already been removed from his post. The DGP also said that the NDFB-S ultras might try to disrupt forthcoming polls in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Council (BTC) in Assam.The MLA stated that the militants belonging to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Ranjan Daimary faction) or the NDFB-R had terrorised the people in general and businessmen in particular in parts of Sonitpur district by resorting to rampant extortion while the police have failed to provide protection to the people.
The legislator who represents Sootea LAC of Sonitpur district has alleged that a section of police officials in the district might have been hand on glove with NDFB-R militants and sharing the money extorted by the militants. The legislator has lodged a complaint with Assam chief minister and home minister Tarun Gogoi besides raising the issue in the state Assembly demanding a probe into alleged police-militants nexus in Sonitpur district especially in Chariduar area.The opposition MLA informed that the militants of the NDFB-R which is now in truce mode with the government of India, have demanded ‘monthly tax’ from villagers from Bogijulee village under Chariduar police station which prompted the villagers to lay siege to Chariduar police station on Sunday last.
The legislator alleged that even though the village was being frequented by the militants belonging to the NDFB-R and NDFB-S, the security forces have not bothered to set up a camp in the village to check the movements of the militants.
Meanwhile, on the basis of complaint lodged by the opposition MLA, chief minister Tarun Gogoi ordered transfer of officer in charge of Chariduar police station with immediate effect besides ordering setting up of security picket at Bogijulee village. The NDFB militants have been active in northern parts of Sonitpur district where they have set up camps deep inside the dense jungle.
