Elephant electrocuted to death at Army base in Ghy

Guwahati: A female elephant was electrocuted to death in an Army base in Guwahati on Sunday.A Defence Spokesman informed that the female elephant was found dead in the Narangi Cantonment 222 Advance Base Ordnance Depot (ABOD) Area in the early hours on Sunday morning. The elephants’ movements was noticed in the Depot Premises of 222 ABOD at around 7PM on Saturday night. Keeping security aspects in mind, all guard posts were warned to stop all outside patrolling movements. At around 10 PM to 11 PM, Guard post No 5 heard lot of noises and movement of an elephant’s herd in their
general area. This morning during routine patrolling, the orderly JCO noticed an elephant carcass entangled in broken electric wires in general area Guard Post No 5 which gives the idea that the probable cause of death of the Elephant was electrocution.The incident was immediately reported to Range officer, Forest Department, Narangi (Guwahati), for further necessary action. A team from forest officials under Range Officer Nareshwar Das arrived in the location after 8 AM, who was later on joined by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) for further undertaking the required actions. An on- the- spot- post- mortem was conducted by the doctor accompanying the DFO. Elephant was subsequently buried within the depot premises in presence of the forest officials.
