SHILLONG: Normally the Government agencies and hawkers are adversarial to one another but Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has asserted that the State Government is not anti-hawker.
Speaking to media persons during a cleaning drive held in at Police Bazar on Saturday, Lyngdoh said that the State Government is committed to addressing the concerns of the hawkers.
According to Lyngdoh, the Government would take care of the hawkers and try to provide a designated place for them within city limits.
Lyngdoh who participated in the cleaning drive further asserted that the blame game on the issue of garbage management has to stop and it is the residents of Shillong who need to come forward to tackle the menace of garbage.
“I don’t think there is any need for external agencies like Shillong Municipal Board if the residents come forwards and ensure cleanliness in their respective areas,” she said.
Meanwhile, as Police Bazar, the main commercial hub of the city is facing a garbage onslaught , the Shillong Roadside Hawkers Association would send notices to all the shopkeepers and hawkers in the area to keep their respective corners clean and well maintained.
