MeECL cuts electricity supply as SMB delays payment of dues

SHILLONG: The fountain light installed in the heart of the city at Khyndailad has not been functioning for over a month now as the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited has cut power supply to the fountain due to non-payment of electricity dues by the Shillong Municipal Board.
When contacted, MeECL Public Relations Officer (PRO) P.P. Kar informed that power was disconnected after December 31 due to non-payment of electricity dues by SMB.
Power was temporarily made available on January 25 and 26 when a mega event was organized at Khyndailad on the occasion of Republic Day.
The fountain light was installed at a massive cost around a decade back.
Shopkeepers in the area lamented that the lights were not     functioning since the past several days but no one was bothered to address the issue.
Some shopkeepers claimed that the dark rotary at Khyndailad was leaving a bad impression on the minds of hundreds of tourists who frequent the place.
When contacted, an official of the Urban Affairs department said the department was not aware of the matter and predicted that the MeECL might have stopped power supply since the fountain was consuming a huge amount of power.
