SHILLONG: The commissioning of the abattoir at Mawlai Mawiong is being delayed as the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department is waiting for the MeECL to install a transformer at the site.
“We are waiting for the MeECL to install the transformer for the project. A separate transformer is required since the slaughter house is expected to consume substantial amount of power,” official sources informed here.
According to the sources, the project was complete barring the treatment plant which is supposed to treat the effluents which will be released from the slaughter house.
“We have constructed a number of ponds for the purpose of releasing the liquid wastes from the slaughter house; besides, a treatment plant is also in place to treat the waste water to be used for domestic purposes and for fish ponds,” the sources said.
With regards to solid waste, the sources said that the department will set up a plant to convert solid wastes into fertilizers.
The sources further informed that the department has held meetings with several meat sellers from across the State and requested them for their support and cooperation urging them to make use of the slaughter house.
The abattoir would have a capacity of 160 large animals, 240 pigs and 240 small animals (goats) per day.
