TURA: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) will resume its demand for a separate Garoland State with a public procession cum awareness campaign at Chokpot Playground in South Garo Hills on Monday.
The proposed awareness campaign is aimed at sensitizing people on the need for the creation of a separate Garoland State.
Informing of its decision to hold the dual programme GHSMC Chairman, Nikman Ch Marak said that there was a need for the creation of a separate Garoland State as Garos had their own distinct ethno-cultural and linguistic identity.
Referring to the Human Rights Declaration of the UNO in 1948, Marak said that India, which is one of the signatories of the UNO, should uphold the international treaties to meet the genuine aspirations of the Garos.
Marak said that as per the recommendations of the State Reorganization Commission, 1956 the reorganization of a state was done based on language and culture of an area, financial, economic and administrative conveniences resulting in the creation of states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
He argued that a separate state for Garos can be created on similar lines.
Meanwhile, a memorial service will also be held at the venue of the awareness campaign on Monday for Late Late Clifford R Marak, the founder of Garoland movement whose 68th birth anniversary falls on the same day.
