SHILLONG: The political instability in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council is likely to continue to linger for some more time since there are no indications that Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi will return to the State any time soon.
The 17 MDCs of the All Regional Parties’ Alliance had earlier planned to meet the Governor to voice their objection to the decision of the Meghalaya Cabinet to impose Administrator’s Rule in the KHADC.
Earlier, there were indications that the Governor will be present in the State between April 12 and 16.
“When the Governor had visited Mizoram recently, we were informed that he will be here in the second week of April. But after his Mizoram visit, he flew directly to Delhi to attend the 64th NEC plenary meeting,” official sources in the Governor Secretariat informed on Sunday.
The sources also informed that they have not received any information about the Governor’s scheduled visit to Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, sources from the District Council Affairs department informed that the file pertaining to the Cabinet recommendations for imposition of Administrator’s Rule was forwarded to the Governor only on April 7.
Earlier, it had been reported that the file was forwarded to the Governor for its approval immediately after the Cabinet took the decision on March 25.
In the wake of the Governor’s absence, the KHADC Executive Committee under Adelbert Nongrum is still continuing in office since his resignation is yet to be accepted.
It has been informed that the Executive Members were continuing with their official duties and were regularly attending their offices.
ARPA had impressed upon the Governor to convene a special session for election of the new Chief Executive Member (CEM).
“With the stepping down of the incumbent CEM Adelbert Nongrum, there is no hindrance or deadlock to convene the special session for the election of the new leader to lead the Council. We kindly request you to convene a special session to enable the present internal arrangement to materialize as per Constitutional provision,” ARPA Chairman Metbah Lyngdoh had stated in a letter submitted to the Governor earlier.
