2 dead, 14 injured in Delhi fire

New Delhi: Two people including a seven-year-old girl died and 14 others suffered burn injuries after a major fire broke out here on Sunday, fire officials said.The fire broke out around 3.38 a.m. in three houses in west Delhi’s Mangolpuri.Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the firemen doused the flames by 4.30 a.m.Surekha, 30 and Gayatri, seven, died due to suffocation caused by the fire, while the injured, who include four children, were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital where they are being treated, an official said.”The fire ignited after a high tension wire near one of the houses came in contact with an inflammable item. The fire then spread to two other houses,” a fire official told (IANS).

9-day-old water protest in Khandwa continues

Khandwa (MP): With the agitation against the raising of the water-level in Omkareshwar dam in Madhya Pradesh continuing for the ninth day on Sunday, the condition of protestors highlighting their plaint by squatting in the river worsened.The protest comes in the wake of the raising of the height of the water-level in the dam to 191 metres from 189 metres — which has resulted in a large area of farming land becoming inundated.The protest is being staged by the affected people and activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan group — and their health is turning from bad to worse with each passing day.One of the protestors and Narmada Bachao Andolan activists Alok Agarwal told that there were 20 people staging the protest while sitting neck-deep in the river water. They are getting cold, suffering fever and the condition of their legs, due to sitting in the water, was also deteriorating. (IANS)

2 boys drown in a water tank

Gurgaon: Two boys drowned here in a water tank belonging to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) on Sunday afternoon, police said.They were identified as Rishu, 10, and Raja, 16. They were residents of Saraswati Enclave.Rishu and Raja were cousins whose family belonged to Patna in Bihar.Both went to the HUDA-owned water tank near Basai village.HUDA supplies water to its sectors and private colonies after treating it at the Basai plant.”The boys went there for swimming. Rishu who did not know how to swim slipped into deep water and when Raja came forward to help his cousin, both drowned. We are searching for the bodies,” a police officer said.”Though HUDA has imposed a ban on using the water body for bathing or swimming purposes, many people flout the regulation,” an official said.In the last few years, many people, especially students have drowned in the water body.Officers posted at the Rajendra Park police station are investigating the incident.
