Urges govt to pass Village Admin Bill at the earliest

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) expressed regret over the arrest of the Sordar of Wahkhen, Skhembor Khongjirem,  allegedly due the lack of responsibility and inaction on the part of the State government to legislate a law for due recognition of traditional institutions of the State.
In a statement issued here on Monday, KSU publicity secretary, Shemphang Lyngdoh said that the Union has on several occasions urged the State Government to pass the Village Administration Bill, which has been kept in abeyance for reasons best known to the government.
“We (KSU) request the State government to take immediate steps to legislate a law for recognition of the traditional institutions of the State by passing the Village Administration Bill at the earliest,” Lyngdoh said.
He further said that the Committee formed by the Government to strengthen the traditional institutions of the State, headed by Chief Adviser to the government of Meghalaya, DD Lapang, has failed to come up with any suggestions even after two months of its formation.
“This clearly shows the lackadaisical attitude of the Committee with regards to the exigency of the matter,” Lyngdoh said adding that the Committee should expeditiously send its recommendations in order to avoid any further delay on this sensitive issue.
