Twin demands: Pro-ILP groups’ deadline over, Govt silent

SHILLONG:  After the State government’s failure to fulfill their twin demands within stipulated timeframe, the pro-ILP pressure groups have decided to stage sit-in-demonstration on Wednesday from 10am.
The pro-ILP groups had earlier set a 48-hour deadline for the State Government for fulfillment of twin demands – (A) release of KSU president Daniel Khyriem and (B) dropping of all the cases filed in the Special Court against leaders of the pro-ILP pressure groups.
Informing this here on Monday after a meeting, the FKJGP president Joe Marwein told reporters that they would seek permission to hold the protest at the parking lot of the Additional Secretariat.
The HNYF general secretary Sadon K Blah said that the State Government was yet to make its stand clear regarding dropping of cases against them.
“During our last meeting, the State Government had given a hint about dropping of all cases pending against the leaders of the pro-ILP groups. It has not materialized yet,” Blah said.
By framing charges against the leaders, the State Government tried to suppress the voice of the people, he added.
Echoing a similar view, Marwein said that the government should come clear on dropping of cases and immediately release the KSU president.
The KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said, “Now, the ball is in the court of the State Government and we will leave it to its wisdom”.
Police on Thursday arrested the KSU president after he refused to accept the bailable warrant served on him by the special court constituted by the State Government to conduct the judicial process for damage suit filed against the leaders of pro-ILP pressure groups.
JSU demand: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has demanded immediate unconditional release of the KSU president, our correspondent adds from Jowai.
“We demand that the KSU chief be released before the situation deteriorates further,” the JSU finance secretary, H Symblai said in a release.
