Non-cooperation Movement announced in West Khasi Hills

NONGSTOIN: Headmen and Sordar of various villages in West Khasi Hills District have decided to launch a ‘Non-cooperation Movement’ in the district to pressurize the State Government to take immediate steps to legislate a law for recognition of the traditional institutions in the State by passing the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014 at the earliest.
The headmen and Sordar took the decision during a meeting organized by the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) here on Monday.
Besides Sordar and headmen from various villages of the district, the meeting was also attended by HSPDP president Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, party MLA cum MDC K.P. Pangniang, legislator Witting Mawsor MDC L.G. Nongsiej and other senior members.
The meeting expressed concern over the High Court ruling against the headmen and requested the State Government to pass the Village Administration Bill, which has been kept in abeyance for reasons best known to the government.
Spailin Sohshang, Sordar of Markasa village, while addressing the meeting, asked the government to pass not only the Village Administrative Bill but also the Lineage Bill and the Land Bill.
Addressing newspersons after the meeting, Pangniang informed that they have decided to launch a non-cooperation movement against the government whereby all the headmen from West Khasi Hills will discontinue participating in government programmes until the Village Administration Bill is passed.
The meeting further demanded that the government should prepare the State Mining Policy at the earliest to benefit the people and the economy of the State.
In addition, the HSPDP has also proposed a public rally in West Khasi Hills to protest against the government’s failure to address all the issue related to the public.
The date and time would be announced shortly, the party said.
