‘Home Minister should owe moral responsibility’

SHILLONG: The HYC on Monday demanded the State Government to constitute an independent inquiry into the alleged indiscriminate lathi-charge by police on women protesters during the public rally organised by the organization on Friday last.
The HYC also demanded that Home Minister Roshan Warjri should owe moral responsibility for the incident.
“The State Government should constitute an inquiry into the incident,” HYC leader Wankit Kupar Ryntathiang told newsmen here on Monday adding that the Home Minister should take full responsibility of the incident.
Expressing shock over the fact that male police personnel launched a lathi-charge on women protesters, the HYC demanded stringent action against the “erring policemen” who were involved in the “unlawful and highly questionable” incident.
The HYC reiterated that the action on the part of the police was unwarranted since not a single member of organization was carrying any weapon.
“The crowd had no intention to create any law and order problem,” Ryntathiang said adding that the police failed to apply other options like use of tear gas and water to control the crowd.
HYC women’s wing leader R Kurbah said that the women had decided to lead the protesters from the front to ensure that people attending the meeting disperse peacefully.
HSPDP condemnation
Meanwhile, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has also slammed the State Police and the Meghalaya State Commission for Women in relation to the lathi-charge incident.
Besides slamming the police for its action, HSPDP MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew said that the attitude of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women is regretful as it has not initiated any probe into the incident.
The HSPDP leader called for strict against the policemen, magistrates and public officers present during the incident.
