14 lakh expired medicines bought to treat anaemia

SHILLONG: While the scam related to the purchase of capsules under NRHM worth over Rs.7 crore to cure male infertility still lingers, the State Government had bought over 14 lakh (14,85,000) tablets, which had already expired, to treat anaemia in pregnant women and women in general.
The purchase was part of the Rs.1.44 crore medicines procured under NRHM for anaemic women including those who were pregnant in 2010-11 to 2011-12.
Questions are being raised on whether the number of women afflicted with anaemia tallies with number of medicines purchased. Sources said that since NRHM is a Central project, a CBI inquiry is the need of the hour both for the purchase of capsules without any indent to treat infertility among men and medicines for women who are afflicted with anaemia.
