SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee, a conglomeration of Khasi Students’ Union NEHU Unit, Meghalaya Post Graduate Students’ Union and NEHU Students’ Union on Thursday shot off a letter to the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development demanding appointment of  a full-fledged Vice Chancellor for NEHU within September 30.
The Joint Action Committee on Thursday held a black flag meeting on the University campus which was attended by many students.
The students threatened to launch democratic agitations if the Central Government did not fulfill their demands within the stipulated timeline.
JAC chairman Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, while addressing the meeting said that students have become the victims of dirty politics of ‘illiterate’ politicians, adding that a letter was sent to the ministry over the same demand but the Ministry did not even respond to the letters.      “We face these problems as our university is in a North Eastern state,” he said, adding that now one person was holding three posts in NEHU, which was illegal.
He informed there had been a delay in declaration of results of the students; and those wanting to pursue further education were denied admission in other educational institutions. NEHUTA president said it was the failure of the Indian Government that the University did not have a full-fledged Vice Chancellor for the past two and half years. He further informed that in a telephonic conversation with the Secretary of MHRD, they had been assured that a full-fledged VC in NEHU would be appointed by September.
