Alleged fake encounter of Nokma’s son
SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the State Government to produce ballistic as well as forensic reports related to the killing of Sengbath Ch. Marak, the son of Nokma of Oragitok village, Abal M. Sangma, in an encounter on March 4 this year in West Garo Hills.
During the hearing on the matter on Wednesday, the Court directed the government to produce ballistic and forensic reports as per the submission made by M.F. Qureshi, the counsel for the petitioner, who is the father of the victim. The matter will be listed after two weeks.
According to sources, the magisterial inquiry report did not refer to the ballistic and forensic reports which necessitated the production of these two reports in the Court.
During the magisterial probe, many witnesses gave statements against the police for the killing of the son of Nokma.
The petitioner, while alleging that his son was killed in a fake encounter, had sought a CBI probe into the matter, besides demanding a compensation of Rs.25 lakh from the Government for the loss of life of his son. There were 21 bullet wounds on the body of Marak.
While police had claimed that Marak was shot dead during the anti-insurgency operations against GNLA militants, at around 6 am on March 4 at Rimba Adinggree near Oragitok village under Rongram police outpost, the victim’s father had alleged that his son was shot dead by one Mingran T. Sangma in the presence of Bitching N. Marak, Circle Inspector of West Garo Hills, and other police personnel.
Mingran T. Sangma alias Lodrin T. Sangma in fact was the chief training instructor of GNLA and he had surrendered before the police in April, 2011 along with a group of 20 GNLA cadres.
