SHILLONG: The setting up of a slaughter house at Mawlai Mawiong has been further delayed due to slipshod work of the MeECL.
Sources informed on Saturday that the MeECL installed an old transformer instead of a new one.
The MeECL has installed the transformer as per the agreement with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department.
The officials of the AH&V department were shocked to find this during the inspection of the premises of the slaughter house, sources said.
According to sources, the department had paid the required amount for installation of a 500 KV transformer in April this year to the MeECL.
Sources said that the AH&V department has directed its engineer to take up the matter with the MeECL.
Moreover, sources said that this latest development has further annoyed since this is not first time that the department had to face an unpleasant situation in view of the lack of professional approach on the part of the MeECL.
“The department (AH&V) has to send several reminders to the MeECL foe installation of the transformer. The department took nearly five months to install this old transformer,” sources informed.
According to official sources, the plant to treat the effluents which will be released from the slaughter house is nearly complete.
“We have constructed a number of ponds for the purpose of releasing the liquid wastes from the slaughter house besides a treatment plant is also in place to treat the waste water into clean water to be used for domestic purposes and which will also be converted into fish ponds.” Official sources said.
It may be mentioned that there were apprehension that the slaughter house might pollute the Umshing river, which is the main source of drinking water supply to the people of Mawlai Mawiong.
Earlier, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has constituted the joint inspection committee which will be responsible to ensure that the Umshing River is not polluted in view of the construction and operation of the abattoir of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department at Mawlai Mawiong.
With regards to solid waste, official sources said that the department has also decided to set up a plant which will convert solid waste to fertilizers.
Official sources further informed that the department has also held meetings with several association and meat sellers from across the state and requested them for their support and cooperation urging them to make use of the slaughter house set up by the government
The abattoir would have a capacity of 160 large animals, 240 pigs and 240 small animals (goats) per day.
It may be mentioned that the slaughter house was being constructed by the Rapsang Group of Companies and Real Growth Company of Chennai.
