Restriction on publication of news on bandh, other agitations
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Editors’ & Publishers’ Association may approach the High Court of Meghalaya to vacate the ban imposed against the media on May 27 from publishing news related to bandh and other forms of agitations, after the lawyers representing MEPA withdrew the petition from the Supreme Court which ‘dismissed the matter as withdrawn’.
MEPA general secretary, Philip Marwein, who is the petitioner in the case, said on Sunday that he received the information from the Supreme Court lawyer that since MEPA had not approached the High Court first, the petition was withdrawn from Supreme Court.
After the matter came up for hearing on September 18, the Supreme Court in its order said, “The Counsel appearing for the petitioner seeks leave to withdraw applications for permission to file the petitions for special leave as well as the petitions. They also seek to reserve their liberty to move the High Court. The matters are dismissed as withdrawn.”
