Inquiry report to be submitted today

SHILLONG: On the first anniversary of the Mookhep firing incident which resulted in the death of two people, the report of senior government official D.P. Wahlang, who was asked to probe the incident, will be submitted on Thursday.
It was on September 24 last year that two persons were killed and six injured at Mookhep village in East Jaintia Hills when police fired at a mob which had blocked the National Highway in protest against the arrest of a person from Wapungskur village in connection with the attack on police and the magistrate during the economic blockade against the apathy of the Government in addressing the issues related to ban on coal mining.
Following the incident, the Government first ordered a magisterial inquiry then rejected the report and finally constituted a one-man inquiry panel under D.P. Wahlang to probe into the incident.
Since there were many versions of the incident, the State government constituted a magisterial inquiry headed by  East Jaintia Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner S.S. Syiemlieh.
The magistrate submitted his report to the Political department on Nov 11 last year.
However, the report was trashed as the magistrate had not gone according to the terms of reference including the need to find out the circumstances that led to the incident and fixing responsibility on those responsible for the firing incident.
Though the report is set to be submitted on Thursday, Jaintia Hills based organisations have been demanding for making the public. A CBI inquiry into the firing incident has also been demanded.
Meanwhile, a group of five organisations – RJYF, JSM, HANM, MPUF and HNYF – will organizing a sit-in protest on Thursday as a mark of protest against the incident and will also unveil a memorial for the two victims – Derestmon Siangshai and Setlang Phawa.
