Crime on the rise in East Khasi Hills

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills District is witnessing a rise in the crime rate with each passing year. As per police statistics, incidence of cognizable crimes committed under various crime heads of the IPC has gone up in the district.
As per records from 917 crimes under IPC in 2012, the number rose to 1127 crimes in 2013 and went even higher to 1327 in 2014.
Spurt in theft cases alarming
As per statistics, theft cases accounted for most of the crimes and have been rising steadily over the years. From 208 in 2012 to 217 in 2013, theft cases rose to a massive 399 in the district last year. To add to it, 53 cases of robbery and 35 cases of burglary were also reported in the district last year.
Though over 100 cases of rape were registered in the last three years, the statistics reveal that not a single case of sexual harassment was reported in the district in the last six years.
The district also recorded 50 cases of murder in the last two years.
Meanwhile, only seven cases of abduction of women and children were reported in the district in the year 2014 even as 23 cases of kidnapping were reported in East Khasi Hills last year.
