Upgradation of Mawngap-Mairang-Ranigodown road

SHILLONG: PWD Minister Sñiawbhalang Dhar has informed that the State Government is still awaiting the pending funds from the North Eastern Council (NEC) for the up gradation of the 85 km Mawngap-Mairang-Ranigodown road, which is an alternative route connecting Meghalaya with Assam.
“There was a delay in releasing the funds due to the failure on the part of the State Government to submit the utilisation certificates (UCs),” Dhar told newsmen recently.
The PWD Minister also said that the Government would like to see people travelling to Guwahati airport utilize the 85 km road.
According to sources, one of the major reasons for the delay in submitting the utilization certificates was the involvement of several contractors in the implementation of the project.
Interestingly, the Chief Engineer PWD (Border Roads & NEC Works ), Assam had on February this year invited tender for the up gradation/improvement of Mairang Rani godown Azara road under NEC’s 11th Five Year Plan Programme.
When asked as to why the neighboring state was also floating tender for the same project, sources in the State PWD informed that the PWD in Assam is implementing the road project in areas falling under its jurisdiction.
“The road falling in Meghalaya portion ends at Rani godown gate. We have started the up gradation of the road in the Meghalaya section much earlier,” sources said.
