SHILLONG: SPs in the five districts of Garo hills have been directed to educate the public about police initiative to prevent kidnappings on the highways.
IGP Law and order GHP Raju said that South West Garo Hills SP Aditya Goenka held a meeting with all businessmen from Ampati, Mankachar areas to make them partners in this preventive policing exercise for their safety.
The meeting was held in order to sensitise people to inform the police in case they are served with a demand notice. Further the numbers of the PCR and police officers were shared to respond in any emergency.
Police also asked people from Mankachar to move in a larger convoy when they go for weekly haats to prevent kidnappings.
Meghalaya Police have initiated preventive policing mechanism in all the vulnerable segments on highways in Garo hills.
Raju said that Police have studied the modus operandi adopted by militants and armed criminals in identifying victims of kidnappings, the vulnerable routes, vulnerable time etc. Based on this analysis, the district superintendents of police have devised a “preventive policing action plan” for all the five districts in Garo hills and for South West Khasi Hills.
The aim of the initiative is “deny an opportunity to militants and armed criminal gangs” to commit crimes such as kidnappings, abductions etc of innocent civilians.
