SHILLONG: NPP Meghalaya State Unit has thanked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for its decision against the imposition of AFSPA in Garo Hills.
NPP in a statement issued to the media on Sunday said that people of Garo Hills are relieved at the fact that the High Court Order is going to be challenged in the Supreme Court and they look forward to a positive outcome from this initiative of the Centre.
Stating that Meghalaya is going through its worst phase in its entire history in terms of lawlessness and zero growth, the party said that it condemns the apathy of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who has undoubtedly proven himself as the most inept Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
“His inefficiency is what has led the High Court to make such observations about law and order situation in Garo Hills and the consequent order for imposition of AFSPA in Garo Hills,” the party said.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students ‘ Union ( KSU ) has also reiterated its opposition against the implementation of AFSPA in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya as the union felt that the draconian law is not the solution to the problems that are prevailing in Garo Hills but will however ,further complicate the problems.
“This particular Act has led to several cases of undemocratic and human rights violation by the armed forces, as experienced in the Northeastern states”, the the KSU said.
The Federation for A’chik (FAF), All India Garo Union (AIGU) and Unified Peace Movement for Garo Hills (UPMGH) have also expressed their gratitude to the Centre Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju for taking the decision to oppose the recommendation of High Court to implement AFSPA in Garo Hills. They have also urged all like-minded people to work together for the cause.
