Guwahati: The court of special judge granted five days CBI custody for ULFA leader Golap Barua alias Anup Chetia in connection with a murder case registered with Golaghat police station in Assam in 1986 on his production by the CBI on Wednesday.
The ULFA leader who was extradited from Bangladesh to India on November 11 last, was brought to Guwahati by a team of CBI by a special flight on Wednesday morning for production before the special CBI court in connection with the same case for which the CBI had earlier procured six days transit remand on production of the ULFA leader in a New Delhi court on November 12 last.
The ULFA leader’s counsel Bijon Mahajan informed that the CBI sought 14 days custody of the ULFA leader but the court gave only five days remand and asked the investigating agency to produce the ULFA leader before the court here after five days.
“The court also directed the CBI to provide proper medical care and good food to Anup Chetia while in its custody. The court asked the CBI to facilitate daily medical checkup of Chetia and submit report to the court submit medical report on Anup Chetia. The counsel of the ULFA leader should be allowed to meet him while in custody,” advocate Mahajan said.
Anup Chetia is an accused in the case of murder of Congress leader Debajit Dhar Chaudhury who was killed on August 29, 1986.
The case (No.86/86) registered with Golaghat police station was handed over to the CBI in 1988.
The CBI in this regards registered a case No. RC 4(S)/88. At least 17 police cases are registered against Anup Chetia in various police stations in Assam, police source said.
Wife and teen-aged son of ULFA leader were allowed to meet him in the court premises on Wednesday.
A number of senior leaders of pro-talks ULFA faction including Pradip Gogoi, Sasa Choudhury, Jiten Dutta met the ULFA leader in the court premises on Wednesday.
The he was again flown out of Guwahati by a special flight this afternoon.
