Shillong: Electioneering came to an end on Thursday for the Nongstoin by-poll, scheduled to be held on Saturday.
Four candidates, including a woman Independent candidate, will fight to represent the prestigious seat, which had been represented by Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) legislator Hoping Stone Lyngdoh for decades.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of Lyngdoh on September 26.
The opposition, HSPDP has fielded Diodstarness Jyndiang, a close-aide of Lyngdoh. While the ruling Congress is aiming for a record win, it would face a tough battle in the by-election from its own rank and file as former health and family welfare minister Advisor Pariong was denied ticket in favour of Gabriel Wahlang.
Apart from Jyndiang and Wahlang, Mosklandar Marngar from UDP and the lone woman contestant Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglai, who has joined the fray as an Independent nominee, are the other contenders.
