SHILLONG: A student sensitization workshop was organized by University of Technology and Management on Thursday.
The seminar discussed growing cases of substance abuse and its dangers and issues related to cyber crime, gender sensitivity and traffic awareness.
The workshop held at State Central Library organized under the aegis of ‘The Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme 2014-15’.
Addressing the workshop, Vivek Syiem, SP (City) highlighted the issue of substance abuse and its growing menace specifically in and around the city.
“There are various socio-geographic factors contributing towards the mammoth rise in the cases of drug abuse and drug peddling across spectrum of population and the cascading effect on the mental and physical wellbeing of the youths,” Syiem said.
He also made students aware of the looming threat to one’s privacy and dignity posed by ever rising instances of cyber crime.
Annie Sohtun, Coordinator, Meghalaya State Commission for Women, spoke about the gender inequality plaguing the society.
Issac Marak, Inspector, Traffic Branch, highlighted the issue of traffic irregularities and lawlessness on roads in the city and the highway.
Marak also advised the students to seriously follow traffic rules.
Professor Utpal Ghosh and Dr. SJ Chopra, Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of University of Technology and Management also spoke on the occasion.
