PIL seeking abolition of dist councils
SHILLONG: The Centre is yet to file any affidavit in response to the PIL moved by RTI activist Michael Syiem for abolishing the district councils.
Though the PIL was moved, it is yet to be admitted in the High Court of Meghalaya pending the response from the Centre.
The lawyer taking up the case on behalf of the mover of PIL said on Tuesday that the state government and the three autonomous district councils have already filed their affidavits.
Earlier last month, the High Court had asked the Attorney General of India to file the affidavit regarding the PIL before proceeding ahead. As per the affidavits filed by the state government, after the formation of Meghalaya in 1972, legally, the autonomous district councils were allowed to continue. The affidavits of the three district councils have also justified the continuation of district councils in the state. The four central ministries which are yet to file their affidavits include Parliamentary Affairs, Law and Justice (department of legal affairs), Home affairs and Tribal affairs
