SHILLONG: Newly elected HSPDP legislator from Nongstoin, Diosstarness Jyndiang, has vowed to continue the fight against uranium mining in Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters after being sworn-in as the newest member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Jyndiang said his party (HSPDP) would continue to oppose any sort of uranium mining in Domiasiat or anywhere else in the State.
When asked about the decision of the government to construct roads in uranium rich areas Nongstoin-Domiasiat-Mawthabah, he said good roads are required in West Khasi Hills but added that the party would not allow roads to be constructed for the purpose of uranium mining.
He also affirmed that his top most priority would be to oppose any encroachment by Assam in Meghalaya.
“We will continue to raise the issue of border dispute with Assam and oppose any encroachment by the neighbouring state,” he said while adding that he wants to follow the footsteps of late Hoping Stone Lyngdoh and wants to fulfill his last wishes by             continuing to voice issues related to the inter-state border dispute with Assam on the floor of the Assembly.”
He also said that two years was a short time for any MLA to bring development in any constituency.
It may be mentioned that Jyndiang defeated Congress candidate Gabriel Wahlang in the November 21 by election which was necessitated following the death of HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh on September 26.
The swearing in ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister R.C. Laloo, Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Sports Minister Zenith Sangma and PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, besides others.
HSPDP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit and party MDC K.P. Pangniang also attended the swearing-in ceremony along with family members and supporters of Jyndiang.
