Chetia’s inclusion in ULFA talks unlikely: Union Minister

SHILLONG: The Centre has ruled out the possibility of involving ULFA leader Golap Baruah alias Anup Chetia, recently extradited from Bangladesh, in the ongoing peace talks with the insurgent group.
Indicating this here on Saturday, Union Minister of state for Home, Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary said that as of now the Centre has no such proposal involve him (Chetia) in the peace talks.
It may be mentioned here there has been demand from several quarters to involve Chetia in the peace talks.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently urged the Central government to include the ULFA leader in the peace talks.
Gogoi’s appeal came a day after the ‘pro-talks’ faction of the ULFA held a round of discussions with Central government representatives and pressed the Centre for Chetia’s inclusion.
Chaudhary also said that Chetia has to face the legal process and not go scot-free. “Nobody can escape the law. Chetia has to go through the legal process (for his criminal acts),” he said.
Chetia, who was in Bangladesh since his arrest by the neighbouring country’s police in 1997, was handed over to India on November 11 following which he was arrested by CBI in Delhi the (    next day.
PTI adds from Guwahati: Meanwhile, Chetia’s bail plea was on Saturday rejected and he was remanded to another 14-day judicial custody after his remand in connection with a CBI case ended.
Chetia was produced in the court of the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI, Assam on expiry of the tenure of his judicial custody in connection with a CBI case and he was remanded to another 14 days of judicial custody.
He will be produced again before the court on December 19 next.
