BR Rana, Kharkrang refute charges
SHILLONG: Breaking his silence after nearly one and half years, former Inspector of Police (CID), Shillong, Anjan Chakraborty, against whom two FIRs were registered in 2014, has announced his decision to drag one of the complainants Karuna Sindhu Ghosh to court.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Tuesday, Chakraborty said that Ghosh had circulated the former’s pictures in Silchar town offering cash awards leading to his arrest.
” I will file a defamation case against him,” he said.
It may be mentioned here that Ghosh had lodged a complaint at Shillong Sadar police station stating that Chakraborty had introduced him (complainant) to one Gopinath Das, Chairman of Global Engineering Development Corporation, Kolkata, who promised to sanction a loan of Rs. 1 crore at the interest rate of 14 per cent per annum.
On February 27 last year, an MoU was signed by both the parties following which the complainant paid an amount of Rs. 19,50,000 as loan processing fees.
In March and April, the Company issued two cheques of Rs. 50 lakh each through Central Bank of India, Park Street, Kolkata, in the name of the complainant. However, both the cheques had bounced.
Making his stand clear on the case, Chakraborty said that he only introduced Ghosh to Gopinath Das and introducing people cannot be a crime.
A second case was lodged by one Ranadhar Dhar at Shillong Sadar police. In the FIR Dhar stated that on December 7, 2013 at around 3 pm, Chakraborty went to his shop at GS Road, Shillong and offered to supply cameras to him.
Later, he took one camera valued around Rs. 14,000 from his shop as sample piece but did not return the same till date.
While denying the charge, he said that as per the police statement of Dhar, an amount of Rs 6000 was already deposited in the SBI account of his wife “since I took the camera on installments.”
“As per service conduct rule there should be an inquiry before a police officer is arrested. But in my case no inquiry was conducted because I am a non-tribal,” he said adding that the police had declared him as an absconder “but no one can declare anyone absconder except the court.”
Coming down heavily on BR Rana, IGP, Chakraborty said that the senior IPS officer tortured him mentally and even refused to accept his voluntary retirement application. However, the High Court later allowed him to take voluntary retirement.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills district police chief M Kharkrang said that Chakraborty was arrested in connection with the criminal case registered against him and due process of law was followed while arresting him.
On the other hands, Rana said that there was no question of harassing him mentally and “all records are there pertaining to the cases.”
Police had conducted a proper inquiry into the matter, he added.
