SHILLONG: In two separate foundation stone laying ceremonies on Sunday, the bases for Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class at Sohra and the annexe building of the High Court of Meghalaya in the city were laid by Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya Uma Nath Singh in the presence of High Court Judges T.N.K Singh and S.R Sen.
The completion of the buildings is expected to speed up the justice delivery system.
It may be mentioned that only on January 13, 2014, the judiciary was separated from the executive in the Sohra Sub-division, and prior to that, the judicial powers in Sohra sub-division were exercised by Sub-divisional officer, Sohra (Civil Sub-Division).
With the coming of new recruits and appointments of new Judicial Officers and the need for a separate Judicial officer for easy access to justice in Sohra Subdivision, the High Court of Meghalaya had posted a Judicial Magistrate at Sohra Sub-division exercising powers of  Judicial adjudication under Sohra-Subdivision with effect from March 25,2014.
For the time being, the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class is still functioning from the office of the Sub Divisional Officer, Sohra.
The area allotted for the separate court complex is 40,000 sq. ft and the cost for the construction of a two storied court building is estimated at Rs 10 crore.
