SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) and the Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) on Tuesday condemned the killing of havildar Khomraj Bhattarai in Tapa Darengchi area.
In a statement issued here, the CSWO said that the rise in kidnappings and murder in Garo Hills is matter of great concern. The CSWO said that the incident was a result of the failure of the State to curb terrorism.
The CSWO has alleged that many policemen in West Khasi Hills are indulged in illegal extraction of coal and extortion.
Pointing to the death of late SI P J Marbaniang, who was allegedly murdered after he detained coal trucks, the CSWO alleged that some personnel, who fear for their lives, told the organization that high ranking police officials have knowledge of most of the terror activities and they even help in managing the posting of their men in West Khasi Hills and certain parts of Garo Hills.
The CSWO further claimed that residents of those areas in West Khasi Hills have also informed that armed extremists can move around freely as they are in league with most of the corrupt police.
The MPHRC while conveying its condolences to the bereaved family members of the late policeman urged the government to ensure that law and order is maintained and adequate security is provided to the general public.
